A full-blown draconic cry of pain loosed from Esther's throat as something alien and strange tore her mind to shreds. She didn't know what it was or where it came from. One second, she was perfectly fine, riding happily on Napoleon's back with Charlotte as he flew towards the broodtown. They were on their way to Ruth's shelter, to meet up with Asher once he was done at the water treatment plant. The next second, it was as though a large chunk of Esther's brain had suddenly been torn from her skull.

Esther collapsed into Charlotte's arms, shivering and whimpering. She thought she heard the woman speaking to her, but when Esther tried to organize her thoughts and project them to the woman, she found the knowledge slipping away. She couldn't form the words, no matter how hard she tried. Even as she realized this, she found her understanding of Charlotte's words slipping away too. One moment they were sounds she recognized and understood and the next, they were indistinguishable from static.

It was as though the part of Esther's brain that was capable of speaking, capable of understanding, was suddenly gone.

Esther squawked in impotent rage as she realized what had happened. She screeched and cried out into the night, begging for the power to undo the damage, for someone to help her! Nothing answered her cries. She felt the touch of Napoleon's mind against her own and desperately grabbed it, but even his voice was alien to her.

She couldn't understand him!

She couldn't understand anyone!

Esther keened in pain as she sent the same picture to Napoleon over and over again.

Asher, lying dead in a blank, empty void.
